Get an echocardiogram at Newport Community Hospital
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound for your heart. Often called an “echo,” it is a non-invasive ultrasound exam that allows your care team to visualize how your heart structures look and how well they are functioning. Using high-frequency sound waves, we create real-time images to help assess heart muscle motion, valve performance, blood flow patterns, and overall cardiac health. This test is safe, painless, and typically completed within 45 to 60 minutes.
What is an echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of your heart as it beats. This allows providers to evaluate:
- Heart muscle movement and function
- Valve performance
- Blood flow patterns through the heart
- Overall cardiac structure and health
This test is safe, designed for comfort, and typically completed in between 45 and 60 minutes.
Why your provider might order an echocardiogram
Your provider may recommend an echocardiogram to better understand symptoms or monitor heart health. Common reasons include:
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- Heart murmurs
- Evaluation of heart function
- Monitoring known heart conditions
- Symptoms related to heart failure
- Follow-up care after diagnosis or treatment
If your doctor has recommended an echocardiogram, you can ask to have your referral sent to Newport Community Hospital for faster access to care. Echos require physician referral.
What to expect during your echocardiogram
A standard echocardiogram is non-invasive and painless. You lie on your left side while a technologist moves a small ultrasound probe across your chest using gel to capture images. The exam typically takes about 45 to 60 minutes. No special preparation is required, and you can return to normal activities immediately afterward.
In some cases, an image-enhancing contrast agent called Definity may be used to obtain sharper, more detailed images, particularly when routine ultrasound pictures are limited. Definity improves visualization of the heart chambers and wall motion, helping your provider make the most accurate diagnosis. If needed, an IV line will be placed so the contrast can be safely administered during the exam. It is well tolerated, and your technologist will walk you through each step before it begins.
