The 2019 Autumn Bloom race committee, in keeping with a new tradition, bestowed another special annual award for the person who truly embodies the Spirit of Autumn Bloom year after year. The Spirit of Autumn Bloom, in honor of long time race supporter Danny Woelk who passed away in 2018, recognizes race loyalty, superior attitude, and competitive inspiration for all ages. Race sponsor and Newport City Council Member Keith Campbell presented the 2019 award to Newport resident and NHHS Laboratory Manager, Tina Batsch, who received a special plaque and her name engraved on a perpetual plaque displayed at Newport Hospital and Health Services. With each year, the Foundation will recognize a new winner who, like Batsch, embodies the Spirit of Autumn Bloom. Batsch created the first race route for NHHS Foundation back in 2008.
Three Officers from the City of Newport Police Department, along with Pend Oreille County Fire District 4 provided route security for race participants. Runners were encouraged along the route by bike marshals (Brandon Nokes, Keagan Stott, and Angus Hicks-Frazier) and more than 115 community volunteers including groups from House of the Lord School, Newport High School HOSA, Newport High School National Honor Society, Newport High School Fire Science, and Newport High School Cheerleaders. Miranda Campbell opened race day singing the National Anthem, and race emcee/deejay Keith Campbell fired up the crowd and welcomed them across the finish line. Newport Autumn Bloom Race Director, Cindy Campbell, and NHHS Foundation Event & Program Supervisor, Lori Stratton, masterminded another seamless race and are already planning for 2020 Newport Autumn Bloom set for Saturday, September 19, 2020.
This year’s event benefited local programs funded and administered by Newport Hospital and Health Services Foundation, including Healthy Kids Snack Bags and Reach Out and Read. Race times were verified by Across the Line Timing/Nomadz Racing Services. Links to final race times, as well as photos by race photographer Tim Hatcher, will also be available on the hospital District’s Facebook page.
